Treatment of Wrinkles with Botox

Treatment of Wrinkles with Botox

When treating facial wrinkles locally, it is important to differentiate between dynamic and static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are visible regardless of whether we use our facial mimic muscles or not. They are therefore very suitable for treatment with fillers. Dynamic wrinkles, however, are due to the activity of the underlying mimic muscles. They are only visible when the mimic muscles are activated, and disappear when the muscles are at rest. The best examples of these are the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows that make us look worried or angry. These wrinkles or lines are therefore best treated with Botox™. The active ingredient in Botox™ makes the muscle relax and the wrinkle disappear. (It is the botulium toxin in a very small amount diluted in saline water)

PROCEDURE

The Botox™ injection is carried out with a very fine needle, with great precision and specifically treats the muscles causing the wrinkles and lines. Results take from 2-10 days to appear.

The duration of the result will depend on the individual, but on average lasts 4 – 8 months. The injection has therefore to be repeated at these intervals.

Indications

The best results are usually obtained on the forehead. The vertical lines between the eyebrows as well as the horizontal lines above the eyebrows, all respond very well to Botox™ treatment.

Even the height and the shape of the eyebrows can be adjusted with Botox™.

This can often be a solution for a patient that needs a surgical forehead lift, but for different reasons wants to postpone a decision on surgery.

Side effects

Other than an occasional bruise from the injection itself (which disappears in a few days), there are very few and they are all reversible. The main annoyance is a drop or an irregularity of the eyebrow’s position. In case of dry eye syndrome, patient needs to put more hydrating drops for the next weeks following injections
